So, I've come to realize there are two types of KTV's in Beijing: the type you bring your girlfriend to, and the type you don't.
I know many girls who go to KTV's with their friends, don't drink and sing all night. Then I know the guys who go to KTV's, drink, sing half the time and spend the rest of it talking to a hired girl. And I'm sure additional 'services' are available at a cost.
So, if KTV's are so prevalent in China, what do the parents think about it? I mean, to me, KTV's are basically whorehouses, but more fun. Where is the line drawn? Can you hire girls at all KTV's? |

Ya, I have female friends who have as well. They're confused (and a bit disgusted) when I ask them about the hired girls. But nearly every single guy I have met knows what I'm talking about. How could such a duality exist? |

Yeah I asked Candy about this and she laughed. I can't remember what words she used but she said there are two different names for the two 'types' of KTV in Chinese. One that is the normal KTV for girls who want to sing for 5 hours and have a buffet and orange juice, and the other one where guys go and do very little singing, get very drunk and 'play' with some members of 'staff'.
Personally I've not been to one of the whorehouse kinds yet, although I would be intrigued just to see the atmosphere. Normal KTV is cool, but only if I go with a few westerners and order a bottle of vodka or something. Then singing backstreet boys might seem OK, although that might require two bottles! |

| I've heard of the not-so-innocent kind of KTV lounge, but have never actually been to one. All the ones I've been to were the "sing all night til you have no voice left" kind. I think I'd like to go investigative reporter on this one and see how the other half lives. Zach, you up for being my right-hand man? I don't think they'll bring out the "services" without one... |

I dig that. I've been to a few. They're relatively innocent compared to a brothel, and I definitely wouldn't go as far as to call them whorehouses. The girls just join you, and sing with you. You can be close to them, touch them a little, but there are lines. I'm sure there are many where the lines aren't drawn so strictly as well.
If we can get some funding, let's go undercover in one of those for sure. What's to lose right? |

I've been to many more KTV's since posting that, and I've realized that most of the KTV's have working girls you can pay to join you, but they don't bring them out unless you ask and generally assume not to when you are in a mixed-gender group.
Doesn't really bother me. But then again, what does? |

James Lipton, in his new autobiography, mentions that in his youth he worked as an organizer for a Parisian brothel. Once he became respectable back in the US, he hosted a party at the same brothel for members of the elite that was catered by the working girls. They were specifically told they weren't to offer their services, but some offered anyway. The only person to go upstairs with any of the prostitutes was Barbara Walters, apparently to "interview" them. |

i think most of 量贩式 KTV are not whorehouses. sorry,i dont know how to translate 量贩式. dont worry,u can just take your gf with u to 量贩式ktv. but if u wanna go to "whorehouses ktv", the girls u hired can drink with u,sing with u,dance with u. in your vip room, they even could striptease. but u cant take her home.the girls just do this kind of things they are just 坐台. if u wanna take her home,it calls 出台. 出台 is more expensive than 坐台. but not every girl u hired would like to 出台. coz it's more dangerous for them. in KTV,there "mom" will protect them, and every ktv has their security. |

The "mom" in KTV's and brothel's is called the "mamacita."
But Partyworld and Melody both have girls who will join you to sing, and those are the legitimate KTV's. They may not 出台, but that wasn't exactly what I was talking about. If you can pay to have girl come to a room with you and sing and pretend to like you and let you touch them a little, aka 坐台, that's also a form of prostitution, just to a lesser degree. |
